Crafted through an intricate and complex weaving technique, involving silk with silver and gold metallic threads (hikihaku) this is a high quality, formal Obi. The design incorporating the Phoenix indicates that this piece was made for a high-status individual and would have been intended for use on important ceremonial occasions.

In Japan the mythical Phoenix embodies Justice, Rebirth and Divine Harmony.
