Gilt-Bronze Figure of Buddha

Kamphaeng Phet Province, Thailand

Fourteenth Century   

Buddha shown robed, cross-legged, in Dhyana mudra position with both hands resting in the lap, the back of the right hand leaning on the palm of the left hand, with thumbs touching, forming the mystic triangle.  A representation of the meditation mudra, symbolising wisdom.

Buddha used this hand gesture during his final meditation under the Bodhi tree, when he attained full enlightenment.

Traces of a reddish layer beneath areas of surviving gilt surface.
