CARVED WHITE MARBLE FIGURE OF HERMES

Probably Roman, after the antique.

Standing on a well executed wooden stepped stand of 19thc origin.

Originally known as the Belvedere Antinous it was first mentioned in February 1543 when it was purchased for 1000 ducats from Nicolaus de Palis and placed by the Pope in the Belvedere garden in the Vatican. However, it is now considered to be Hermes after a Greek original which now resides in the Museo Pio-Clementine in the Vatican.
