Presentation Marble Specimen Table

PRESENTATION MARBLE SPECIMEN TABLE TOP BEARING AN INSCRIPTION

Dated 1888.

The Carrara marble top inlaid with a mosaic of approximately 200 ancient marble specimens and inscribed to the frieze:

'To: Thomas B. Sandwith Esq. CB. Her Britannic Majesty’s Consul General.

As a token of esteem from the British and Maltese residents of Tunis 1888.'

This extensive selection of choice specimens would suggest that these may have been gathered from an ancient Roman site in North Africa or supplied by a marble mason with access to classical antiquity.

The many specimens include:

Spanish Brocatelle, Sicilian Jasper, Malachite, Lapis Lazuli,  Greek Cipollino, Cipollino  Marino, Campan, Alabastro Fiorito, Bianco e Nero, Breccia di Aleppo, Breccia Coralina, Breccia Gialla, Breccia Pavonazza di Exine, Breccia Pavonazza Sfrangiatta, Breccia Quintilina o di Tivoli, Alabastro Egiziano e Octognino, Breccia di Sciro o di Setabassi, Breccia di Serravezza Antico, Brocatelonne, Castracane o Astrocane Dorato, Granito Rosso Aswan, Lumachella Rosso, Lumachellone Antico, Pavonazetto, Porfidi Rosso Laverizio, Verde Antico, Occhio di Pavone and many other rare stones.
