GEORGE I FIGURED WALNUT COUNTRY HOUSE BUREAU OF EXCELLENT COLOUR AND PATINATION

Original metalwork with drawer linings of the finest wainscot oak.

Width: 3’ (91.5cm); Depth:21” (53cm); Height: 41” (104cm).

This handsome bureau has all the qualities of a piece of furniture made for a grand country house where it was both used and cherished by an important family. The carefully selected veneers have been split to form V-shaped designs on the top, fall and drawer fronts, all enhanced with herringbone stringing and generous cross-banding. The baize lined fall front encloses an interior of a long drawer with pigeon holes above and flanked by four short drawers to each side.


Provenance:   Previously with a label inscribed ‘Ven Drawing Room’ as stated in Dukes catalogue of the sale of the contents of Sandford Orcas Manor on the 6th March 2024.

Almost certainly commissioned by the Medlycott family for Ven House Somerset. Then by descent at Sandford Orcas Manor.
