George I Black Japanned Bureau Cabinet

England Circa 1730. Probably made for the European market

 

Height 96” (294cm) width 42” (107cm) depth 24” 951 cm)

 

In three parts the gilded and turned finials to a broken arch pediment over two hinged doors opening to reveal a compartmentalised interior surrounding a central mirrored door with short drawers below. The bureau fall opening to reveal a well fitted interior with short drawers, central well and covered writing surface, above four short drawers and two long drawers. All surfaces are extensively decorated in gilt depicting Chinese figures in birds in foliate landscapes.

 

 Some metalwork sensitively replaced.
