Italy, Circa 1880

Height with column 70 ¼” (178.5cm)

Height of statute without column 32 ½” (82.5cm)

The son of an Italian sculptor (Fernando Fontana), Aristide Fontana followed in his father’s footsteps developing a classical romantic style, clearly drawing inspiration from the legacy of Antonio Canova.

Living between London and Italy, Fontana exhibited at the Royal Academy four times from 1881-1885, offering a total of six works including ‘The Pensierosa’ in 1881 and ‘The Allegra; marble’ in 1882.

This remarkably detailed and well executed sculpture has an excellent colour and patination is presented on a substantial revolving base.
