Anglo Indian Carved Hardwood Camel Table

Western India Circa 1850

Length 30” (76cm); Width 23” (59cm); Height 26” (66cm)

This exceptionally fine camel table is carved in the round and stands on an octagonal stepped pedestal base.  The design is worked in relief with foliate patterns, a rope like decorative band with hexagonal stellar motifs to the base.  The realistically carved camel with cushions, saddle and rug on its back has a saddle shaped table top with a plain central section surrounded by a profusely carved floral and foliate design with a gadrooned edge.  On either side below the table top are two elegantly carved lotus buds with bulbous column finials, reminiscent of Indian architectural decoration.

The unusual saddle shaped table top, the camel’s charming expression and the outstanding colour and condition all contribute to this being the finest camel table that we have been fortunate enough to acquire.
