Rare Hoshiapur Bone Inlaid Circular Tea Table in the Mughal Tradition

Northern India circa 1850

Diameter 24 ½” (62 cm) Height 23 1/2” (62cm)

The centre has an octagonal cartouche of petal design contained within a relief carved band of trailing foliage. The outer design consists of sixteen foliate sprays issuing from vases, each flanked by a pair of birds, the sprays formed as trees of life. The latter is contained within a further foliate band above a carved and inlaid apron. The top is supported on a turned and carved column terminating in three cabriole legs, extensively inlaid with leaf and petal geometric designs.

The relief carved border surrounding the central cartouche is most unusual, exquisitely executed and would appear to be the work of a highly skilled craftsman

A beautiful table indeed.
