Egyptian Revival Carved Giltwood and Blue Painted Sofa

With twin supports depicting Sekhmet in animal form after the design of the ceremonial throne discovered in Tutankhamun’s tomb.

This magnificent carved giltwood and painted sofa was luxuriously decorated in celebration of the many extraordinary finds revealed during the excavation of the burial chamber of Tutankhamun, after its discovery by Howard Carter in the Valley of the Kings, Thebes in 1922.

Much of the carving and the decoration is based on the exquisite Ceremonial Throne

found in the tomb which is currently in the Cairo Museum.

Sekhmet was the ancient Egyptian Goddess of war, fire, pestilence and healing, who could not only cause plagues and death, yet also cure disease.
