Japanese Bronze Eagle, Meiji Period, Circa 1880

Japan | c. 1880

A striking bronze sculpture of an eagle, with gilt bronze eyes and feet. The bird sits atop a rocky outcrop, its wings spread as if about to take off. Indeed, the work is cast with extraordinary naturalism and attention to detail, a characteristic typical of Japanese bronzes of the Meiji Era, shown here in the distinct textures of the feathers and the scaly feet. Presented on a naturalistic stand carved out of Asian hardwood.
