Louis-Rene de la Chalotais 1701-1785 was a French legal scholar, most known for his part in the ‘Brittany Affair’, often seen as a precursor to the French Revolution. In 1764 the Breton Parliament refused the French Monarchy’s authority over taxes.

Provenance: The Earl and Countess of Perth, acquired from Ginsberg and Levy, New York, 9th April 1965

Exhibited at the Detroit Institute of Arts No 244, French taste in the 18th century.
