Rare Pair of Venetian Console Tables

A pair of Baroque carved and pierced polychrome lacca console tables with gilded highlights.

VENICE CIRCA 1710

Height 34” {86.5cm) Width 20” (51cm)

These extraordinarily intricate tables have each been carved and decorated with great skill and imagination. The panels are finely painted with birds perched among floral foliage and the carved and moulded shellwork is highlighted with gilt. Each panel is bordered by delicately pierced and carved panels of interlocking circle design.

These complex tables represent the ultimate in the creative design, artistry and craftsmanship that flourished during the Venetian Empire and were surely commissioned for a palace interior.

The original blue ground which is evident under close examination, has been changed to green by a later lacquer finish. The sienna marble tops are replacements.

Provenance:    An important European family collection.
