An Extremely Rare Petitor Breccia Marble Column

Inscribed : ‘BABBACOMBE, DEVON, 1868’

 

Provenance: Possibly one of a series of Devonshire marble columns originally held in the V&A collection for the display of sculpture.

 

The column made from Petitor Breccia, a very rare type of marble with a creamy pink hue.  One other example can be found in a stairway column at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History.

 

 Height: 47.5” (121cm).  Diameter: 12” (31cm).  Base: 16.5” (44cm) square.
