AN IMPORTANT GEORGE III SCOTTISH MAHOGANY SIDEBOARD
CIRCA 1785
Of outstanding colour and patination
This magnificent double serpentine-fronted sideboard has a stepped platform above two cutlery drawers flanking a central tablet, two further deep bottle drawers and two cupboards, all crossbanded and inlaid with box wood stringing. The whole is raised on eight inlaid tapering legs with square collars.
Measurements: Height 43 ½” (110.5 cm) width 9’ (273cm) depth 38” (97cm)
Provenance:
Almost certainly made to grace a ‘Buffet Niche’ for a grand house in Edinburgh New Town where building commenced circa 1770 and was completed circa 1820. Many of the major houses featured dining rooms with one demi lune end which naturally formed a buffet niche.
Buffet Niches were particularly popular in Scotland where extensive dining rooms were created for grand entertaining. These Niches were specifically designed to display the owners’ finest silver and porcelain to impress the guests.
Edinburgh New Town which was originally designed by James Craig, also included commissions for Robert Adan and Sir William Chambers.
