Neo-Classical Collectors Cabinet

England | c. 1780

The flat cornice bordered by a pierced brass gallery above two open shelves flanked by two doors, the door fronts each decorated with 8 wax cameos, mostly portraits joined by interlocking marquetry festoons of ribbon bows and husks. The shelves and the doors are bordered with bands of lacquered brass.

The marquetry decoration joining the cameos bears comparison with that on the side doors of a commode made by the Linnell workshop for Robert Child, Osterley Park. See figs 113, 116 and 117 William and John Linnell, Helena Haywood and Pat Kirkham, published 1980.
