Chinese Export Lacquer Cabinet on Stand
A FINE CHINESE EXPORT BLACK AND GILT LACQUER CABINET ON STAND
CIRCA 1710. FOOCHOW OR CANTON
The gilt mahogany base George 1, adapted and embellished in the early 19th century
The doors are designed with pavilions and temples among prunus trees in a mountainous watery landscape. The inside of each door displays bamboo shoots and the sides depict insects among flowering shrubs. The interior contains an arrangement of eight drawers with gilt sprinkled interiors, while the exterior of each drawer is decorated with landscapes.
The decoration on this cabinet is exceptionally well executed and the design does relate to earlier Japanese lacquer. It is interesting to note that it has been suggested that the best export lacquerware was produced in Foochow by an immigrant Japanese family,
