INDO-PORTUGUESE EBONY CHAIR FROM THE COROMANDEL COAST

India Circa 1640-1660

Seat rails restored to receive replacement cane. Castors added late 18th century

Measurements: Height 32” (81cm) Height to seat 15 ½” (39cm) Width 20 ½”(52cm) Depth 18 ½”(47cm)

Carved in low relief with dense foliage with twisted balusters, legs and stretchers and cane seat this chair closely relates to a pair of chairs from Cotehele, Cornwall. The latter pair are illustrated in Furniture from British India and Ceylon fig 61 page 133. On page 133 and 134 Amin Jaffer extensively discusses the origins of these ebony chairs and concludes that the Cotehele chairs are from the Coromandel Coast.
