Indistinctly inscribed to the verso of the base, perhaps with the maker’s name.

Joseph Grimaldi (1778-1837) was a famous clown, actor, dancer and comedian, active on the Regency stage. Variations on his signature ‘white-face’ make-up design are still used by clowns today.
