Marble Bust of Caesar Augustus

Italy | c. 1890
A GOOD WHITE MARBLE BUST OF EMPEROR CAESAR AUGUSTUS

As the adopted son and heir of Julius Caesar, Augustus became the First Roman Emperor from 27 BC until his death in AD 14.
After the assassination of Julius Caesar, his maternal great uncle, in 44 BC, he, Mark Antony and Marcus Lepidus formed the Second Triumvirate to defeat Caesar’s assassins. Eventually the Triumvirate was torn apart, Lepidus driven into exile and Mark Antony committing suicide following his defeat at the Battle of Actium by Octavian in 31 BC.
The reign of Augustus initiated an era of relative peace known as The Roman Peace.
