Ceylonese Calamander Centre or Dining Table

Galle District Ceylone | c. 1840
A spectacular and rare calamander and ebony centre table. This unusually large table displays an extraordinary sun-burst top of carefully chosen calamander, one of the most highly prized of the Ceylonese indigenous woods, with a carved edge, supported on a square column with detailed stylised-leaf carved panels to each side and raised on an octagonal plinth base with carved paw feet to the corners.

The present table displays interesting local cabinet-making techniques, notably the use of wooden pins throughout to secure the specimen calamander veneers and in the general construction.

The table with excellent depth of colour, surface and patination to the whole.
